Why oral cannabinoid delivery is hard

Cannabinoids are fat-soluble, which makes them difficult for the body to absorb from a standard oral dose. Most of that dose is lost to first-pass metabolism in the liver before it reaches circulation. Published human data place oral cannabinoid bioavailability at roughly 6% to 19% (Huestis 2007; Millar 2018). That is the gap NATURIA PLUS™ was built to close.*

The mechanism

NATURIA PLUS™ is a milk fat globule based, self-emulsifying delivery system. Fat-soluble cannabinoids are encapsulated inside milk fat globule structures, the same biological carriers mammals have evolved to absorb fat-soluble nutrients from infancy onward.

The significance is in the route. Conventional cannabinoid oils enter through portal circulation and undergo extensive first-pass metabolism. NATURIA PLUS™ encapsulated cannabinoids instead follow the pathway the body evolved for dietary fat: enterocyte uptake, chylomicron assembly, and secretion into the intestinal lymphatic system, draining through the thoracic duct into systemic circulation before the hepatic portal system.*

What the human data shows

Two peer-reviewed human crossover studies establish the multi-fold improvement of self-emulsifying cannabinoid delivery over standard oils. Knaub et al. (2019, n=16) reported 4.4-fold higher peak concentration and 2.85-fold higher total exposure versus an MCT-oil reference, with time to peak cut from roughly three hours to about one. Hermush et al. (2025, n=14) replicated the direction of the effect.*

What happens when researchers study it

In May 2026, researchers from the University at Buffalo, the University of Michigan, and the analytics firm MoreBetter published a real-world evidence study in Clinical Therapeutics. 168 adults with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis took cannabinoid capsules built on lipid-based delivery in the same class as NATURIA PLUS™ for twelve weeks, and reported improvements across nearly every symptom domain measured, including pain, sleep, mood, and physical functioning.*
